Wow -- you look amazing. I think my scoliosis is close to what yours was. Were you in pain prior to surgery? After you "healed"? Are your movements restricted because of the surgery, i.e., can you turn from the waist, bend, etc.?
Are you able to bend down after the surgery?
It depends how long the fusion is, I cannot bend my back where my spine is fused. So if I want to bend to pick something up I just bend using my knees instead. If you had a shorter fusion your movement would be less restricted.
wow amazing! may I ask who did your surgery? like your surgerns name? and if you used anything for the healing of your scar ? I can't wait to have it done

Louise, you are an inspiration. Thank you for posting so much information in regards to your personal trek. My daughter is 15 and has malignant scoliosis with a 50-55 degree thoracic curve. My understanding is that it is called malignant because last summer she was fine and this summer her spine was curved. It happened very quickly and the fear is that she will continue to progress. We have been to two pediatric orthopedic surgeons and have a pre-op appt. on April 23, 2103. Surgery is scheduled for June 17, 2013 to allow for Natali to finish her first year of high school. Our biggest concern is recovery time. The surgeon said 6 weeks. The first surgeon said 21/2 months. From what I am reading here, it can be much longer. She starts classes again in mid to late August 2013. I hope she is recovered enough by then that she will not miss school. Another big concern for her was her scar. Thank you for posting pictures. I will show these to her to alleviate her fears. Thank you so much for your posts and guidance. It was through your blog that I found the support website. We are in the US (Florida - the Sunshine State!)
Thank you :) that means a lot. Everyone recovers are different rates and I was 10 years older than your daughter when I had surgery so you may find recovery is much quicker for her than it was for me. I wish your daughter all the best with her surgery. Xx
Hi my name is amanda i have surgery on june 4th i am 29yrs old. My mom thinks its a bad idea for me to get it done
My daughter is 12 and had surgery June 15, 2013. She had a 65 degree curve and her rib cage was rotated. The only concern I have had post-op is that the top of her incision started splitting. It's wider than the rest of the scar but is fine now. She started 7th grade this year and is doing just fine in school. She has a home set of textbooks so she doesn't have to carry them back and forth between school and home. She also has a binder for each class and visits her locker between classes so she doesn't carry everything with her. We do not want to give the incision cause to split again, though it does not seem to be a problem. The teachers and administration at my daughter's school are definitely helping her to be successful despite her limitations. Just talk with the ones at your daughter's school.
My daughter also plans on going out for the tennis team and the swim team. She wanted to try out for volleyball but the start of the season was too close to her surgery.

Hi Cristina - surgeons can achieve fantastic corrections these days, especially in patients so young like your daughter :) I would recommend speaking to a scoliosis surgeon regarding level of correction they would hope to achieve as every case is different. Regarding pregnancy, once the fusion is solid (ie after approx a year) and once recovered I've been told there shouldnt be any major problems with pregnancy in future. I know of many people with spinal fusions who have gone onto have children once recovered, but again would be a good one to speak to a scoliosis surgeon / GP about. x
